Exist
Learn to exist.
While you’re at it,
Make your heart sit down,
Explain, examine every limit.
It is not enough to wonder;
Better to go visit.
No Damage
Today, I came into sudden knowledge;
If someone wants the riches I contain,
And I cannot spare what they would leave with,
I won’t have more if they ask me again.
A ring without a stone loses value;
That some people destroy the things they love
Is beyond reason, but sometimes it’s true.
It’s not their fault; they cannot rise above
The limited perspective of their youth,
The burning inside that says “I must take.”
It’s where we all begin, this much is true,
But growth means finding there’s a gentler way.
I will not be split open for my pearl;
I worked too hard. No damage to this girl.
Hot and Smart
We all hate women who are hot and smart;
Don’t bother to deny, don’t waste my time.
Just look at Taylor Swift: she plays the part,
She gets treated like she’s a major crime.
A felony, to be the Most Wanted,
To have the looks to kill, to be a blade,
And not just be the beauty that’s flaunted;
Too much, to have a mind that gets you paid.
A woman does it all, we look for flaws;
She has to have a secret legacy
Of trauma, had to have to rise above
A torturous past just to get to breathe.
We hate a woman who can do it all;
We watch closely, and wait for her to fall.
Cloud-Break
I lived a few decades underneath clouds;
I learned not to see how low-slung they sat.
The ceiling seemed the most I was allowed,
But then, I had a year that changed all that.
The clouds opened, at first with pouring rain;
They screamed themselves empty over my head.
I ran until I drowned, then rose again;
I let my family leave me for dead.
A calm period of quiet, of soft peace;
A storm cannot rage all day, it must end.
A cloud-break: this time sunshine through the trees;
I raised my eyes, all surrounded with friends.
Warm honey all around, summer is here.
The storm is over, now release the fear.
Apex Predator
I am an apex predator, you see,
All flowing mane, muscles, and sharpened claws;
One day, I had to stop, to take a beat,
To choose how often I’ll follow the law.
A she-beast, in her prime, has clear vision;
She is the midwife for her own choices.
Ear to round belly, she stoops to listen;
Lashes together, she hears small voices.
A predator, omnidirectional,
Expands her kingdom to her will, divine.
Her thinking has become more radical.
I cannot help but follow; so has mine.
I walked behind the predator and served;
She taught me what this animal deserves.
Bubble Man
The bubble man is old, but he’s got game;
He winks a green eye in my direction.
Let me accept the things I cannot change;
Decades younger, he’d be my selection.
I’ll drift away with soapy reverie,
Make my way down the street, continue on;
Someone is waiting down the lane for me,
I’m in a rush, I’ve been waiting so long.
The bubble man bids me a lovely day;
His wishes settle over my shoulders.
A smile for him, then I am on my way;
Bet in his wild youth, he was much bolder.
We all exist as bubbles in the breeze;
I’ll spend my time doing just as I please.
Whole
In darkened, quiet theater, two people
Commune with ease, effortless, unblemished.
It’s true that iron sharpens iron; still,
That isn’t the way I want to be kissed.
Something softer: the sound of fresh water
Rushing to kiss the leaves on both their cheeks,
Or wind, wondering at the smooth, rising curves
Of rosy faces colored by the breeze.
Something natural, wholesome, expansive;
I am someone who gets to live this life.
I did the work to make the space for this;
Contentment comes when day breaks through the night.
The secret world is not just on the screen;
Someday, I will find out what this night means.
Fizzy
For the first time in my clear memory,
I did not care what eyes were walking by;
I could not feel the strangers’ gaze on me
Over the feel of his lips kissing mine.
A decade of good therapy has been
Enough for me to head for home alone;
I trust that I will see this man again,
Get so fizzy when his name’s on my phone.
This kiss felt different: less of a battle,
More like a day on sun-warmed, sandy beach.
The ease of it is what has me rattled;
Something delicious is within my reach.
Sometimes, the sum is more than both the parts;
One day at a time. Focus on the heart.
Ember
An ember is a burning memory,
A blaze placed on pause to enjoy later.
For some length of time, it will hold the heat,
But it requires a gift from the taker.
Too long away from the nest of the hearth,
The ember fades to humble, scattered ash;
Easier to handle with deadened heart,
A coal that would survive recalls the past.
The burning needs the air to come alive;
An element cannot survive alone.
An open window brings the breath of life;
The flame remembers the strength of its bones.
A memory is best remembered here,
Right now, up close, so draw the ember near.
Balance
I’ve never felt the scales balance before;
I’ve always held it down, with gimlet eye.
A lot of would-be lifters needed more;
They loved the way I raised them up so high.
So weightless, lacking substance, simple ghosts;
No chance of equal measure from those men.
The scales balance when two both do the most;
I work so fucking hard, I won’t pretend.
I can’t respect a passive leaf-on-stream;
I have no time for wavering resolve.
A lion’s only toothless in a dream;
The flesh-and-blood version, all snatching jaws.
A flowing mane sits, patient, on the scale;
Across the balance, eye-to-eye prevails.
Transition
A wooden door was made for kicking down;
It never even wanted to become
The thing that stands between, that keeps us bound,
It loved being a tree under the sun.
A woman-king is made for steady hands;
They are the girl’s only inheritance.
Her clear eyes see to execute her plans;
When time is right, she knows to take her chance.
A window frame must fit the glass inside,
Or else, the house contains a gaping hole;
Each element sets difference aside,
Each person in the game will play their role.
A doorway sometimes changes a woman;
One foot in front of the next. Transition.
