The story of this poem: I was the youngest in my birth family. Growing up, when I paused to collect my thoughts before answering a question, I was urged to “spit it out” by my loved ones. It was later in life that I learned that taking a moment to reflect before speaking is actually an admirable trait.

I grew up listening to golden age hip hop, and this free verse is a nod of appreciation to the music that shaped my ear.
